Bayesian Immature Survival Analysis of the Largest Colony of Common Murre (Uria aalge) in the Baltic Sea

2019

In long-lived species, such as seabirds, immature survival is the most important life history parameter after adult survival. The assessment of immature survival has often been difficult due to extended periods in which young birds remain unobservable at sea. This study presents results on survival of immature Common Murre (Uria aalge) obtained from an extensive mark-recapture study of a large colony at Stora Karlso in the Baltic Sea, Sweden. This colony, in contrast with other colonies, has the unique feature that many 1-year-old birds return to the colony (12%). Between 2006 and 2016, 28,930 chicks were marked at fledging, of which 5,493 individuals were later resighted in the colony. Ann…

On the consistency of liking scores: a validation study run in France and Germany

2005

International audience; A validation study was performed to confirm the findings of a previous experiment, by enlarging it at younger age groups. The study was conducted in France and Germany. Monadic preferences for seven orange juices were recorded. Three of the samples were replicates of the same juice (RJ). The four others were RJ slightly spiked with chemicals. Each subject then performed a paired preference test composed of RJ and the modified juice whose score was the furthest from the RJ score. Finally, subjects had to choose one among eight reasons why they preferred that sample. The effects of age, gender and country on the consistency of liking scores were examined. Most of the f…

Age of peak swim speed and sex difference in performance in medley and freestyle swimming – a comparison between 200 m and 400 m in Swiss elite swimm…

2013

Vaso, M., Knechtle, B., Rust, C.A., Rosemann, T. & Lepers, R. (2013). Age of peak swim speed and sex difference in performance in medley and freestyle swimming ‐ A comparison between 200 m and 400 m in Swiss elite swimmers. J. Hum. Sport Exerc., 8(3), pp.954-965. The aims of the present study were to examine (i) the age of peak swim speed and (ii) the sex difference in peak swim times in 200m and 400m medley versus freestyle. Swim times and ages of 5,524 swimmers (2,785 males and 2,739 females) from the Swiss high score list from 2006 to 2010 were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The age of peak swim speed was younger for females (~20-21 years) compared to males (~22-25 …

Co-colonization with carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii in intensive care unit patients

2013

Objectives: This investigation was conducted to study co-colonization by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) and Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients in Palermo, Sicily, a geographic area where both organisms are endemic in the healthcare setting. Risk factors at admission and during ICU stay and outcomes were also evaluated. Methods: All patients colonized by KPC-Kp, or CRAB, or both in 2 ICUs of a large general hospital during the period October 2011 – March 2012 were enrolled. Demographics and clinical data were collected. Resistance determinants and clonality of the 2 organisms were characterized by mo…

Decline of physical activity from youth to young adulthood in Finland

2000

TELAMA, R., and X. YANG. Decline of physical activity from youth to young adulthood in Finland. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 32, No. 9, pp. 1617‐1622, 2000. Purpose: As a part of a nation-level research program, Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns, the aim of this study was to analyze age-related decline of physical activity among Finnish young people. Methods: The number of subjects at the beginning of the study in 1980 was 2309, representing both genders and ages 9, 12, 15, and 18. The follow-up measurements were repeated in 1983, 1986, and 1989. Thus, the data cover ages from 9 to 27. To measure physical activity, a short self-report questionnaire was administrated in connection with med…

Bone quality in the midpalate for temporary anchorage devices.

2009

Objective The aim of the present study was to quantitatively assess the bone quality of the palatal bone from an implantologic standpoint. Material and methods The material consisted of palatal tissue blocks of autopsy material from 22 subjects (19 male, three female), between 18 and 63 years of age. The specimens comprised the anterior part of median palate (APMP) from about 7 mm behind the incisive foramen (first premolar regions), the middle part of median palate (MPMP, second premolar region), and the posterior part of the median palate (PPMP, first molar region). They were prepared in the transversal plane using ground-thin-section technology. The midpalatal areas of the different part…

Risk factors for high myopia: a 22‐year follow‐up study from childhood to adulthood

2018

PURPOSE To determine the effect of the definition of high myopia on its prevalence and risk factors for high myopia. METHODS A total of 240 myopic schoolchildren (119 boys and 121 girls) at the mean age of 10.9 years (range 8.8-12.8 years) were recruited to a randomized clinical trial of myopia treatment among children from 3rd- and 5th grades of school referred for an eye examination due to poor distant vision and having no previous spectacles. Clinical follow-ups, including refraction with cycloplegia, were conducted annually at 3 years [third follow-up here = clinical follow-up 1, (n = 237)], and thereafter twice at approximately 10-year intervals [clinical follow-ups 2 (n = 179) and 3, …

Detection of HIV type 1 non-B subtypes in Sicily, Italy.

2004

To evaluate the presence of HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Sicily, we sequenced and genotyped HIV-1 PR and RT regions of the pol gene using plasma from 169 HIV-1-infected adult patients. All samples were obtained from a study of antiretroviral-associated resistance mutations resulting in virological failure during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Eight (4.7%) patients had the non-B HIV-1 subtype including some circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). All of these individuals acquired the infection by heterosexual transmission. The detection of HIV-1 non-B strains was significantly associated with younger age of HIV-1 acquisition. Our findings indicate, for the first time, the presence of…
